City Mission holds topping-off ceremony for “Sally’s Sanctuary” women’s shelter
Washington City Mission held a beam-signing and topping-off ceremony Thursday morning to celebrate a construction milestone for “Sally’s Sanctuary” women’s shelter being built in the city. The $7.1 million shelter that will offer housing for up to 50 women for overnight stays is about one-third of the way through construction.
Sally Mounts, who recently retired as the City Mission’s chief development officer and for whom the shelter is named, was the first to sign the beam, followed by numerous others during the ceremony. “I’ve got a pen to sign this beam,” Mounts said. “Let’s get it up. Let’s finish that shelter.”
The beam with “Sally’s Sanctuary” emblazoned on the side was then hoisted in the air by a crane and brought into place by ironworkers with Mosites Construction Co. as they installed the final piece of the building’s steel frame.
