Four medical helicopters were called to South Strabane Township in Washington County Sunday afternoon after a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 left several people injured and shut down the interstate for three hours.

According to South Strabane Fire Department, the accident occurred about 2 p.m. in the lane where Interstate 79 North merges onto I-70 West. First responders arrived to find a four-vehicle accident with passengers trapped inside two of them. A boat was being towed by one of the vehicles.

Details on how the accident occurred were not immediately available. State police are investigating.

Three helicopters landed on the interstate to transport patients from the scene to Pittsburgh area hospitals. A fourth person was flown from UPMC Washington helipad. Three others were treated for injuries at UPMC Washington.

The conditions of those involved and the severity of their injuries were not available.

Also responding to the accident were North Strabane Fire Department and Ambulance and Chair EMS.
