The ongoing removal of structures at the shuttered Hatfield’s Ferry Power Station will continue on Friday with the demolition of the site’s boiler house.

The structure, which contained three generating units, is the last major structure standing at the power station located at the border of Fayette and Greene counties off of Route 21.

Todd Meyers, spokesman for FirstEnergy Corp., said a specialized demolition contractor will use strategically placed charges inside the boiler house, which stands about 250 feet tall, to bring it down — mostly within its own footprint — at 11 a.m. this Friday.

FirstEnergy owns the plant, which ceased operations in 2013 after more than 40 years of generating electricity.

The state Department of Transportation announced that rolling traffic stoppages are scheduled between 10:45 and 11:10 a.m. in Masontown in Fayette County and Monongahela Township in Greene County.

The traffic delays will be done by state police and will last 15 minutes or less in each direction on Route 21 between Route 88 in Greene County and North Main Street in Fayette County.

FirstEnergy decided to remove the plant’s structures to pave the way for future development and eliminate the potential public safety risk posed by the vacant facility.

The three tall emissions stacks were razed in March, followed by two hyperbolic cooling towers in June.

All of the demolition work is expected to be completed by early 2024, with topsoil brought in and grass planted in the spring.

So far, no plans have been made for the 236-acre site. FirstEnergy retain ownership of the property, which will be maintained primarily as an open, grassy area.

The site will retain a high-voltage electrical substation that interconnects to the regional transmission network, as well as a water-intake structure on the river.
