The state police fire marshal is investigating the cause of Tuesday’s fire in Cokeburg.

An abandoned apartment building in Cokeburg was destroyed by a fire Tuesday morning.

Cokeburg Fire Company Chief Dave Lambert said firefighters were dispatched to 13 Washington St. at about 3:45 a.m. Lambert described the structure as a two-and-a-half story building split into four apartments.

“We had active fire all the way from the second story through the roof,” Lambert said, adding that flames towered about 30 feet higher than the roof.

According to Lambert, the building was abandoned and scheduled to be demolished in the near future.

“The borough took over possession of that the better part of a year ago,” Lambert said.

Lambert said the initial call came from a neighbor who was awakened by “two to three loud bangs.” The state police fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire. According to Lambert, it was too early to tell where and how the fire started.

No injuries were reported.

Also responding to the scene were fire departments from Ellsworth, Bentleyville, Marianna and Carroll Township.
