The Greene County board has worked to bring a little something for everyone to the Greene County Fair in 2024.

Though the official opening ceremony will be held at noon on Sunday, Aug. 4, there’s plenty of activity happening on the fairgrounds in the week prior.

The Fair Queen, Princess and others will be crowned at 4 p.m. July 27, and on Aug. 3, the newly formed 4-H Horse Club will host a horse and pony round up.

“The first technical day of the fair will be Kids Day (Monday, Aug. 5) and we’ll have a tribute band, The Little Mermen out of New York City. The Farm Bureau will bring in kid’s activities throughout the day,” said Bret Moore, Geen County Fair Manager.

On Kids Day, the first 500 children ages 12 and under will be admitted free with the purchase of an adult ticket. That day, activities expand to include the first 4-H livestock show, the home and garden exhibit hall and the amusement rides will be up and running.

Melody Longstreth coordinates the Fair Queen and Princess contest and is also responsible for Kids Day.

“From 4 to 8 p.m. we’ll have activities in the Conservation Building. There will be multiple learning stations set up and you’ll be presented with an agricultural passport,” Longstreth said. “(Children can) get a stamp at each learning station, and then turn it into the Farm Bureau ice cream stand for a free ice cream.”

The stations include information about gardening, alpaca fiber, the spotted lantern fly, beekeeping and fire safety, presented by the Waynesburg Fire Department.

A bonus station includes a meet and greet with the newly crowned queen and princess for pictures and autographs.

“The Little Mermen will take the stage and during an intermission, (and) we’ll draw three winners out from the completed passports. Winners receive a pool party at the county pool, a roller-skating party or both,” Longstreth said.

Tuesday highlights include a wine tasting event from 5 to 10 p.m. and several local bands at 6 p.m. Wednesday brings the Rafter Rodeo event, which offers an action-packed show featuring cowboys and cowgirls battling it out.

“This is a new rodeo show coming in so we’re expecting it to be a pretty big night,” Moore said. “They’ll have clowns, steer wrestling, calf roping, bronc riding and barrel racing. The little kids will ride sheep in an activity called mutton busting.”

Thursday is Senior and Veteran Day and includes a mini vendor fair sponsored by the Greene County Commissioners and SWPA Area Agency on Aging. Those age 65 and older or veterans are admitted for free with a valid ID.

Later that evening, the truck and tractor pull will be at 6 p.m., bringing in fans of all ages.

“The Demolition Derby is one of our largest draws. It’s at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night,” Moore said. “There will be more tractor pulls on Saturday as well.”

Throughout the week, don’t miss wood carving shows by Nate Howard, Bingo, bounce houses and of course, carnival rides.

The carnival will open at 5 p.m. on Aug. 5 and will run from 5 to 11 p.m. every night until the fair closes on Aug. 10.

“The livestock, home and garden activities, carnival rides and more are very central to the fair,” Moore said. “It’s a tradition among families and they are all coming for different reasons. The fair is really an integral part of who Greene County is.”

There is no admission charge on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3-4. From Monday, Aug. 5-Saturday, Aug. 10, admission is $10 per person. Admission includes parking, animals, rides and entertainment and is cash only.
