Historical society serves up soup and a stroll at the Enoch Wright House Museum in Venetia
Take a step back in time to an 18th century Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Enoch Wright House Museum.
The Peters Creek Historical Society (PCHS) will host its annual Soup n Stroll fundraiser at the house from noon to 4 p.m. The event, the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year, includes soup, artisan breads, a beverage and dessert. Guests can also enter a raffle to win gift baskets, or purchase tickets for a 50/50.
For those unable to attend the event, the house will be open for a Decor Stroll on Sunday, Dec. 8 from 1 to 3 p.m., with cookies and beverages awaiting guests.
The house, built in 1815-16, will be decorated for the Christmas season and PCHS members and costumed docents will be available to share their knowledge of the home, the family and the area.
“We feel that our history must be rediscovered and preserved and shared with the community. So much of it has been already lost as generations have passed on, and oral records were not kept,” said Patti Korintus, president of historical society.
“Our goals are to discover, preserve and commemorate local history for future generations to learn about and enjoy,” she said.
Proceeds from the fundraiser support the museum. “There’s always a project with a house from the 1800s,” Korintus said.
The house was built by Enoch Wright, the son of Joshua Wright, who along with his brother James Wright originally laid claim to 800 acres in 1772 in the area known as Peters Creek.
The house was designed for two families with a kitchen at each end. The Wright family members lived in log cabins during the construction.
The log cabin located behind the house, which will be open for tours during the stroll, was donated to the historical society in 2003 and reconstructed after being moved log by log from Claysville.
The Enoch Wight House was donated to the Peters Creek Historical Society in 1976 by Hannah and Kathyrn Marvin of Venetia after the house was left to them by a descendant of the Wright family.
Rooms in the collection that are open for touring include a costume room, coal mining room, colonial room, Native American room, dining room and parlor. The library can be accessed and used for research by appointment.
Each room of the home had a fireplace, covered in later years when the furnace was installed. The historical society has uncovered seven of the fireplaces.
Admission for the Soup n Stroll is $12 for adults and $5 for children under 10, payable at the door. Admission for the Decor Stroll is $5 for adults and $1 per child under age 10, payable at the door.
PCHS is located at 815 Venetia Road in Venetia. Overflow parking for the events is located at the Venetia Community Center, 800 Venetia Road.
In addition to special events, tours of the house are available spring through fall by appointment. Visit the PCHS website, https://peterscreekhistoricalsociety.org/ for more information.
