Waynesburg Borough Councilman Dar Fitch, third from right, announces he will not seek re-election this year at the end of Monday’s monthly meeting.

A Waynesburg councilman’s 30-year run with the borough will end in December.

At the end of Monday’s monthly meeting, Ward 3 Councilman Dar Fitch announced he will not be seeking re-election in November. Health concerns prompted his decision not to run again, he said after the meeting.

Fitch said he had originally stepped in to replace his son, who had left the council to attend law school.

Looking back on his tenure, he’s proudest of his work on Fitch Field, the baseball field at Meadowlark Park, which was renamed in his honor in 2017.

“It’s been years in the making, but it’s come out good,” he said.

Even after he leaves the council, he plans to keep pitching in at the field. He’s helped maintain it for several years, making sure it’s in good shape for the schools, church groups and other organizations that use it throughout the summer, said Borough Manager Athena Bowman.

“The ballpark is his baby,” she said. “We are certainly glad to hear that he will still have some involvement with the duties in maintaining the park. The borough will certainly miss seeing him at the office and council meetings.”

Bowman also praised Fitch for working alongside council members and staff to solve increasingly complex community problems.

Fitch’s term ends Dec. 31. Candidates for the seat can begin circulating petitions on Feb. 18 for the May primary race. Those must be filed by March 11.
