State police allege a Dunbar man used a pickaxe to attack a man in his vehicle before later breaking into the man’s home.

According to the criminal complaint, police responded to a call at the BFS gas station in Dunbar around 1:30 a.m. Saturday where Phillip Nicklow reported that he and his passenger were attacked by Robbie Hall, 52, who they referred to as “Bubba,” while stopped at the intersection of Bridge and First streets.

Nicklow told police he was almost hit by the pickaxe Hall used to smash the windshield and driver side window of his vehicle. Both Nicklow and his passenger were able to flee the vehicle and ran to the gas station to call police.

When police were investigating the case, they interviewed Nancy Holsing, who rents a home to Nicklow and his girlfriend. During that interview, police saw Hall inside the couple’s home on Connellsville Street in Dunbar.

Police said the door was damaged, and Nicklow’s girlfriend Mary Wallace told troopers that Hall came inside without permission and refused to leave. According to the complaint, Hall was located behind a door in the bathroom and taken into custody.

Court paperwork did not indicate how or if Hall knew the couple. He faces charges of felony burglary, aggravated assault and criminal trespassing as well as misdemeanor counts of simple assault, criminal mischief and resisting arrest. He is currently being housed at the Fayette County jail in lieu of a $60,000 bond.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for later this month in front of District Judge Jason Cox.
