A husband and wife were killed as a result of a house fire in Wharton Township.

A married couple died Thursday morning after their Wharton Township home caught fire.

Farmington Volunteer Fire Department Chief Brian VanSickle said crews were called at 6:25 a.m. to 190 Fike Hollow Road and found the home fully engulfed in flames.

Fayette County Coroner Bob Baker identified the residents as Donald Brewer, 70, and Patricia Brewer, 68. The cause and manner of their deaths remain under investigation.

According to VanSickle, there was no one else in the house and no first responders were injured.

“We probably had it knocked down within an hour, hour and a half. We were able to start our search efforts to locate the occupants,” VanSickle said.

He described the home as a ranch-style house, and said that the fire started somewhere in the middle of the structure. The state police fire marshal is investigating the exact cause.

Also responding to the fire were fire departments from Hopwood, Ohiopyle, Markleysburg, Addison and Fairchance. VanSickle credited the Wharton Township workers who kept the roads clear.

“I want to give a shout out to the Wharton Township road crew with assisting us in keeping the icy road conditions passable while doing our firefighting efforts. They did a good job keeping us safe,” VanSickle said.
