Family escapes burning house in Uniontown

A family and their dog escaped a house fire at 6:40 a.m. Wednesday at 44 Hortense Street in Uniontown.

No injuries were reported. The house was significantly damaged, said Uniontown City Fire Department Lt. Scott Conn.

“You’re just glad when you pull up and they’re all out,” he said.

A state police fire marshal was called to investigate, who will determine the cause of the fire and where it started. It did not immediately appear to be suspicious, Conn said.

The structure of older homes like the Hortense Street house contain “void spaces,” or concealed spaces within the house, which create a challenge for firefighters, Conn said.

“They went in there and fought it diligently. They did a real good job of knocking it down,” he said. “Fortunately, we were able to get the fire contained.”

Hopwood Volunteer Fire Department assisted on the scene.

“Everyone just did a really good job. They worked hard to get it under control and worked really well together,” he said.
