A motorist died as the result of a two-vehicle collision Tuesday morning in North Union Township.

State police said the crash occurred along Route 51 near the Jim Shorkey car dealership around 5:51 a.m. Trooper Kalee Barnhart said the collision involved a box truck and a Saturn SUV.

The Fayette County coroner was called to the crash, and pronounced the driver of the SUV dead at the scene. Police have not yet released the identity of person who died.

Barnhart said the driver was the lone occupant in the SUV. The driver of the box truck was transported to a hospital for observation after sustaining a minor injury.

The northbound lane of Route 51 was shut down for four hours following the collision.

Barnhart said state police dispatched its forensic services unit and collision analysis and reconstruction specialists to determine the cause of the crash.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Along with state police, fire departments from North Union Township and Hopwood responded to the scene along with Fayette EMS.
