Following early snowmaking from the recent colder weather, Seven Springs Mountain Resort and Hidden Valley will open their slopes this weekend.

The resorts announced this week that the slopes at both mountains will be open for skiing and snowboarding on Saturday and Sunday.

Last week, Katie Buchan, communications manager with Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Champion, Hidden Valley Resort in Hidden Valley and Laurel Mountain in Ligonier, said the early drop in temperatures allowed them to start their snowmaking system on Nov. 8, which is the earliest start in recent memory.

For the past two years, Buchan said the process of making snow, which generally occurs when the temperature is 28 degrees or below, started Nov. 10.

Since Nov. 8, the resorts’ teams have been taking full advantage of the recent blasts of arctic air with snowmaking, spending the past 11 days stacking up massive piles of snow.

Buchan also noted the replacement of nearly 5,000 feet of aging 20-inch pipe to improve the consistency in water pressure and overall snow quality across the resort’s slopes.

The resorts are asking that skiers and snowboarders check the snow report each morning for the most up-to-date information pertaining to conditions and available terrain.

At both Seven Springs and Hidden Valley, the slopes will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
