Allen Quentin Jones
formerly of Dunbar
Allen Quentin Jones, 100, formerly of Dunbar, passed away quietly at his daughter’s home in North Carolina on Thursday, December 5, 2024.
He was born on April 11, 1924, in Uniontown, to the late Gordon and Lea Herrington Jones. The middle child of seven, he was preceded in death by brothers: William, Gordon, Harold and Blair; and sisters, Leo Belle and Lois.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Army with the 717th Tank Battalion, earning the European Theater Ribbon with two Battle Stars and the WWII Victory Medal.
After earning his bachelor’s degree in education, Allen began teaching special education and then later middle school science in the Connellsville Area School District. Allen was also the Jr. High East basketball coach and led the team to a 16-0 WPIAL Junior Basketball Championship 1969-1970.
A life member of both the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion, Allen had always championed serving his fellow veterans. He was State Commander (VFW, PA) 1986-87, and throughout his 70+ years in the VFW held numerous other positions as well as serving as President of the Board of Trustees of the VFW National Home for Children 1994-95.
Allen married Nancy Carol Dayton of Uniontown, on November 21, 1950. They remained married for the next 70 years until Nancy’s death in 2021.
Survivors include his daughter, Marcia Knight and husband, Eric of Huntersville, N.C.; son, Charles Quentin Jones and wife, Margery of Cranston, R.I.; grandchildren: Melissa of Oak Ridge, N.J., Michaela and husband, Vincent Cromartie of Cranston, R.I. and their daughter, Amiyah.
Friends and family will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 11, in the BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., 111 E. Green Street, Connellsville, where a Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 12, with VFW Chaplin Dave Brady officiating. Interment will follow in Sylvan Heights Cemetery, Uniontown, where military honors will be accorded by the VFW and American Legion Honor Guard.
