Roy L. Upton, Sr., 77, of Dunbar Township, passed away Thursday, December 26, 2024.
He was born January 16, 1947, in Connellsville, a son of the late Roy N. and Jean Marcella Butler Upton.
In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his son, Roy L. Upton II; and sisters, Mary Jean Smitley, Beverly Hibbard, Barbara Upton, and Wanda Bigam.
Roy is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Debra L. Hayes Upton; sons, Richard L. Upton and Ryan L. Upton of Chester, Va.; brothers, William Upton of Fairchance, Larry Upton of Georgia, and Ronald “Pete” Upton of Perryopolis; brothers-in-law, Robert “Uncle Bob” Smitley and Steven Bigam; sister-in-law, Cheryl Mozeik (Kenneth); and several nieces and nephews.
He was a graduate of Dunbar Township High School Class of 1964. After high school, Roy graduated from Catawba College in 1969, where he played football on a scholarship.
He was a teacher at Southern Huntington High School, where he taught English and coached football from 1969-1971.
From 1971-1981, Roy worked for the U.S. Department of Justice with the Drug Enforcement Agency, where he worked as a special agent. This is where Roy met his wife.
Roy was also the proud owner of Roy’s Pub for 45 years (1978-2023). Roy’s legacy and what he loved doing was owning the pub, where he met and made many friends. He loved talking sports and considered many customers family.
Arrangements are under the care of the DONALD R. CRAWFORD FUNERAL HOME, Hopwood. All services will be held privately.
