James E. Syphers

James E. Syphers, 90, of Hopwood, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2024 at WVU Uniontown Hospital.

James was born February 21, 1933 in Greenland New Hampshire, a son of the late Albion Sypher and Mary Gray.

Well Educated, Dr. Syphers taught social work and human service at colleges in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and North Carolina for more than 30 years. He retired from California University of PA in 2002.

He was a member of Monongalia Friends Meeting in Morgantown, WV. James was also involved with many out-reach programs such as PA Prison Society, Habitat for Humanity, and Interfaith caregivers. Helping others was how he lived his life.

In addition to his parents, James is predeceased by sister, Bertha Barrier; and his wife Barbara W. Syphers.

He is survived by brother, Joe DeRochemont; sister, Mary McDonald; and children Gail N. Sypher, Calif., Dale A. Syphers (Mary) Maine, Paul N. Syphers Mass., and Neal A. Syphers Mass.; stepchildren, Dennis L. Walters (Amy) and Marcia W. Griffith (Gerald) of Uniontown; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Friends may pay respects from 1 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m. at the DONALD R. CRAWFORD FUNERAL HOME, HOPWOOD on Monday January 15, 2024. A Life Celebration will be held following visitation at 7 p.m.

Interment will be private.
