Dorothy Smargie, 97, formerly of Masontown, passed away Sunday, January 14, 2024, in Woodhaven Health & Rehab Center, Monroeville.

She was born December 2, 1926, in West Leisenring, a daughter of the late Michael and Anna Kekic Cindric.

After graduating from North Union High School, she attended Mason Frederic Beauty School and worked for many years as a hairdresser at Fran and Marcie’s Beauty Salon in Uniontown.

It was at a Croatian picnic where she met her future husband, Pete. They were married November 18, 1950, and celebrated 60 years of marriage prior to Pete’s passing in 2011.

Dorothy was a member of the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church of Masontown/Carmichaels. She was an active member of the Kolo, Circle of Serbian Sisters and the Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge 354 of Cokeburg.

In addition to her husband, Pete, she was predeceased by a brother, Joseph.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Janice Smargie of Pittsburgh; sister, Martha Luketich of Cokeburg; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great- great-nieces and nephews.

Many thanks to the Woodhaven Health & Rehab Center and Bridges Hospice for the care given to Dorothy.

Friends will be received from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, January 19, in the JOHN S. MAYKUTH JR. FUNERAL HOME, 7 River Avenue, Masontown, where a Pomen Service will be held at 6 p.m. A viewing will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, January 20, in St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, Carmichaels, with a service following at 10 a.m.

Interment follows at Sylvan Heights Cemetery, Uniontown.
