John L. Sokol, Jr., 85, of Uniontown, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2024, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
He was born January 5, 1939, in New Kensington, a son of the late John S. Sr. and Louise Napierkowski Sokol.
In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his brother, Thomas Sokol.
John is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Patricia Frenchik Sokol; children, Diane Waters (Dale) of Streetsboro, Ohio, Chris Sokol of Uniontown, and Jennifer Brach (Paul) of Pittsburgh; his grandchildren, who called him “Pop Pop”, Samantha, Mason, Jacob, Courtney, Marilyn, and John Paul; and his great-grandson, Elliott. Visits from his grandchildren and great- grandson were the joy of his life.
He was the executive director for the PA Turnpike and worked as a PennDOT 12th District engineer.
John was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Society of Civil Engineers, PA Society of Professional Engineers, Board of Directors for the International Bridge, Turnpike and Tunnel Association, and Chairman of the Committee Development of EZ Pass.
He was an avid baseball fan and a lifelong Pittsburgh Pirates supporter.
Friends and family will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 17, in the DONALD R. CRAWFORD FUNERAL HOME, Hopwood, where prayers of transfer will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 18, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. John’s R.C. Church.
