Robert Lawson Stevens

Masontown

Robert Lawson Stevens passed away peacefully on October 2, 2024 in his home in Masontown, with his loving and dedicated wife, Helyn by his side.

He was born on January 4, 1949 in Portsmouth, Ohio a son of the late Robert and Wanda Burke Stevens.

At the age of 17, he graduated from East Portsmouth Senior High School “lettering in football and basketball” and enlisted in the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam Era as a Machinist Repairman on the USS Spiegel Grove. Bob worked as a machinist for Lockheed Martin in Burbank, Calif. immediately following his military service. He then earned his business degree in Columbus, Ohio and worked at various finance companies in Ohio and Pennsylvania before becoming the finance manager at Bryson Motors in Uniontown. It was there that he met Helyn, who came in to buy her first car, and they soon fell in love and built a beautiful life together. They celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary this past August.

After taking an early retirement from Bryson’s, Bob followed his passions and opened the Keystone Toy Trader business, where he brokered antiques. While his interests centered mostly on antique toys, he also had extensive knowledge of antique furniture, jukeboxes and records, collectible memorabilia, and most recently East Asian ceramics. He always proudly proclaimed that he had the best job on earth – getting to play with toys all day.

Bob is survived by his wife Helyn Ruth Sheppo Stevens; their cherished daughter, Dr. Marissa Stevens of Los Angeles, Calif.; brother and sister-in-law Dennis and Jane Stevens of Portsmouth, Ohio; sister Joy (Stevens) Kirsch of Stout, Ohio; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Michael and Karen Sheppo of Gettysburg. He is also survived by beloved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews: Katy, Scott, Luke, Alex, and Rosie Pasieta; Matt, Amber, and Ben Sheppo; James Kirsch; Julie, EP, Quinn, and Maggie Forehand; Tammy and Paul Blaine, and their family Tiffany, Ali, Becca, Addalynn, and Emmett; and Amanda and Kevin Rutherford, and their family Wesley, Luke, and Bentley.

Bob was preceded in death by parents Robert and Wanda Stevens, in-laws George and Mary Sheppo Jr., brother-in-law Judge James Kirsch, great-niece Katie Lacey, and very dear friend Joanne Zawacki.

Bob was – and forever will be – a dedicated and proud father to his daughter Marissa and uncle to Katy and Matt and their families, whom he adored with all his heart. Bob had many hobbies and interests including watching football, tinkering with his jukebox collection, avidly learning about history, swimming in his pool, and of course eating ice cream! Most importantly, Bob loved his classic cars, attending (and frequently winning) local car shows with his prized Shelby Cobra.

The family would like to thank Dr. Richard Pish, who cared for Bob for over 30 years. In addition to his invaluable medical expertise, which Bob so greatly admired, Dr. Pish was an unparalleled friend and source of consistent support and comfort. Bob also received excellent care from Amedysis, WVU Uniontown and Ruby Memorial hospitals, and the Cleveland Clinic, for which the family will always be grateful.

Bob was a steadfast member of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in Masontown. It is the family’s deepest regret that the closure of the church prohibits us from holding funeral services in this sacred space.

Friends and family will be received for visitation from 2 to 6 p.m. on October 6 and at 10 a.m. October 7 at the MAYKUTH FUNERAL HOME at 7 River Ave, Masontown, PA 15461 Funeral services will be conducted by Father Michael Senyo on October 7 at 11 a.m. Internment with full military rites will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Masontown.
