Sandra Lee Cale Shoemaker
Uniontown
Sandra “Sandy” Lee Cale Shoemaker, 84, of Uniontown, passed away Friday, November 28, 2025. She was born October 12, 1941, in Uniontown, the eldest daughter of Donald Cale and Esther Cooley Cale.
A 1959 graduate of German Township High School, Sandy went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Grace College (Winona Lake, Ind.) and a master’s degree from California State College.
She loved children and embraced her job as third-grade teacher with joy and enthusiasm.
After teaching one year at Craig Elementary School (Uniontown) and 30 years at Zachariah Connell Elementary School (Connellsville), Sandy retired from the public school system and later returned to her love of teaching by tutoring at Chestnut Ridge Christian Academy (Uniontown), a private school that she had supported in various roles throughout the years.
As a devout Christian, Sandy was very active within her church community. Her passion for music was felt by all who heard her play the organ as she blessed worshippers at many different churches, including Grace Brethren Church, Calvary United Methodist Church, and Calvary Baptist Church. She lent her perfect pitch alto voice and piano skills to many Easter and Christmas cantatas. Sandy taught children and women in Bible studies and regularly supported missionaries both financially and through prayers. She enjoyed ministering to her family and church friends by sending birthday, anniversary, and Christmas cards. An avid reader, she often shared her books with her friends.
Sandy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harold Shoemaker; her parents; and her sister, Lois Cale Gundling Justice of Crisfield, Md.).
She is survived by her daughter and son, Susan Shoemaker of Morgantown, W.Va., and Jonathan Shoemaker of San Francisco, Calif.
In memory of Sandy and in lieu of flowers, it is suggested that people make donations to mission projects that speak to them.
Honoring Sandy’s request, funeral arrangements are private and have been entrusted to DEAN C. WHITMARSH FUNERAL HOME, 134 West Church Street, Fairchance.
