Bernard J. Sheranek, Sr., 88, of Brownsville, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 2, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born August 22, 1937, in New Salem, a beloved son of Michael and Mary Sumego Sheranek.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army 8th Infantry Division, Germany as a military police officer and member of the elite 82nd Airborne Division. His service was a source of lifelong pride and honor.

After his military service, Bernie returned home and continued in the trade he learned from his father – working as a dedicated meat cutter for over 70 years. He owned and operated Washington Meat Market until 1984 and continued to work at several grocery stores in Fayette and Washington counties until his final retirement at age 85 from Fairchance Shop’n Save.

Bernie was Roman Catholic by faith and a member of the Historic Church of St. Peter.

On May 25, 1964, Bernie married Barbara Andras Sheranek. Together, they built a beautiful life over 61 years of marriage.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marcella Csaplik.

Bernie is survived by his wife, Barbara Andras Sheranek; and sister, Elaine Rozak.

He was the proud father of four children, Mary Beth Sheranek, Bernard Sheranek, Jr. and wife Karen, Stacy Victor and husband Ed, and Nicole Skaflen and husband Luke; and the cherished Pap of seven grandchildren, Andrew Tugwell, Katelyn Victor, Morgan Sheranek (Anderson Panrell), Mark Sheranek, E.J. Victor, Molly Skaflen and Connor Skaflen.

Nothing brought him more joy than sharing his military stories. He loved attending holiday gatherings, military reunions, and church events. He was always willing to help his family, friends, and neighbors. He was deeply loved and will be truly missed by all.

A special thank you to Dr. Adam Burke, the staff at Amedisys Home Health, and family and friends for their support at this difficult time.
