Fairchance
Catherine J. Kopas Sampey, 94, of Fairchance, passed away Monday, September 14, 2026. She was born April 21, 1932, in Filbert, the daughter of the late Andrew and Anna Terifay Kopas.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two infant sisters, Margaret and Mary Kopas; sister, Ann Svatik; and three brothers, John Kopas, Sr., Andrew Kopas, Jr., Vince Kopas, and Frank Kopas; and her husband, Melvin Sampey, Jr.
Catherine is survived by her three children, Lawrence W. Sampey and wife Mary of Newton, N.J., Barry Vincent Sampey and wife Louann of Murrells Inlet, S.C., and Cathy Sampey Barber and husband Rodney Jay of Fairchance; six grandchildren, Samantha Williamson and husband Scot of Hardwick, N.J., Amanda Sampey of West Orange, N.J., Derek Sampey and wife Lindsay of Ventura, Calif., Brent Sampey and wife Jessica of Charlotte, N.C., Robert Tyler Barber of Gulfport, Fla., and Hunter Barber of Minneapolis, Minn.; four great-grandchildren, Noah, Wesley, Logan, and Hannah; and many nieces and nephews.
She was a member of the Ss Cyril and Methodius Church of Fairchance.
For many years, she was self-employed as a hairdresser and later employed by Sears.
She enjoyed being social and singing and performing with the Grandma Honnies. She also loved to play the accordion and to talk and teach everyone Slovak.
The family will receive family and friends in the DEAN C. WHITMARSH FUNERAL HOME, 134 West Church Street, Fairchance, Friday, September 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, September 19, until 9:30 a.m., when Prayers of Transfer will be said. Her Funeral Mass will follow in SS. Cyril and Methodius R.C. Church, 50 North Morgantown Street, Fairchance, at 10 a.m.
Interment will follow in Sylvan Heights Cemetery, Uniontown.
The family would like to thank all the nurses and staff at Peroni’s Personal Care Home and Amedisys for all of the loving care. Also, thanks to Brenda and Karen, who helped her while she was still at home.
