Esther Gillenberger Lohr, 88, formerly of Markleysburg, passed away Monday, July 8, 2019, at The Patriot in Somerset. She was born March 28, 1931, in Addison Township, a daughter of Melvin I. and Twila E. Bluebaugh Gillenberger. Her parents and a son, William "Bill" Lohr preceded her in death.

She is survived by daughters Gerry Louise Thomas and husband Barry of Rockwood, and Mary Catherine Beeghly and husband Roger of Jarvisburg, N.C.; granddaughters Amanda Louise Sanner of Harrington, Del., and Sara Elizabeth Hymel of Monroe, N.C.; great-granddaughter Sophia Grace Hymel of Monroe; and a sister, Betty Burnworth of Confluence; also her extended family, Kellie Kinsinger, Brit, Charity, Beckett and Paisleigh Thomas and Shelby Beeghly.

Esther was a strong woman who believed in an honest day's work and that honesty was the best policy. She lived her life following a "grin and bear it" philosophy with a thorough belief that laughter was the best medicine. When a neighbor needed something she was there to help and with homemade bread.

Her early years were spent working on the farm and later at Barkley Lumber Co. in Listonburg. For many years she worked as a baker at Lone Star Restaurant on Route 40 in Markleysburg and organized bus trips, where she made many friends.

She graduated from Confluence High School in 1949. Her final years were spent at The Patriot, where many on staff became her friends and treated her as family. The family would like to thank them for their kindness.

Funeral services will be private. To honor Esther, take your family out to eat and tell them you love them every time you say goodbye. The family suggests memorial contributions to The Patriot Activities Fund, 495 W. Patriot Street, Somerset, PA 15501, or the Humane Society of Somerset County, P.O. Box 182, Somerset, PA 15501. Arrangements by HUMBERT FUNERAL SERVICES AND CREMATION SERVICES, INC. Condolences may be left for the family at www.humbertfuneralhome.com.
