Sister Maria Assumpta Adams

2 min read

Sister Maria Assumpta Adams, a Sister of Charity of Nazareth, was called to her heavenly home on Friday, January 12, 2018 at the age of 80 and in the 64th year of her religious life.

Sister entered the congregation of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity from Saint Matthias Parish in Youngstown, Ohio in 1954. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from LaRoche College and a Master’s Degree in Education from Duquesne University.

Sister Assumpta served the Church as an elementary teacher for 36 years in the dioceses of Pittsburgh and Greensburg, Pa.

In addition to her ministry in education she also served in healthcare at Vincentian Home and Vincentian de Marillac for two years.

After retiring from education, Sister Assumpta returned to the Motherhouse where she became a community driver until the time of her death. When illness struck she spent a very brief time in Lourdes Hall where she passed away peacefully.

Everyone who knew Sister Assumpta was aware that she was a proud, loyal fan of the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Indians. Outside of her living quarters, she proudly displayed sports items from these two teams. This was a brave move since she lived in Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates territory.

Sister Assumpta was also known for her great culinary skills. The fruits of these skills were generously shared with others, especially her homemade chicken soup.

Sister Assumpta was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Mary (Gonda) Adams.

She is survived by her brother, Edward Adams; sister, Margaret Adams Jerek; nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her Sisters in Community.

Friends will be received at SAINT LOUISE CONVENT, 8200 McKnight Road, Pittsburgh, Pa., Monday, January 15, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Wake Service at 6:00 p.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in the Convent Chapel on Tuesday, January 16, at 11:00 a.m. preceded by a time of viewing from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
