Leaders need guidance
Dear Editor: Look closely at the moral level of the men who hold political power over us today and tell me if you think that they represent the ideal of human maturity and freedom?
Particularly, I am asking you to examine the leadership records of those in power in the Middle East.
What do the leaders of the Palestinians, Jordanians, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Saudi Arabia stand for when they use monetary incentives to reward suicide attacks on Israeli civilians?
Are they living peacefully within themselves? Are they not operating at the level of adolescence, which is a period of human development at constant battle with peace?
Like immature teen-agers, do they not make war on peace, first within themselves, and then with those unfortunates around them whom they dislike, fear, mistrust, censure and disdain?
Salute to volunteers
Dear Editor:
This is National Volunteer Week and on behalf of the Fayette County Division of the American Heart Association, I would like to thank the many volunteers in Fayette County who carry on the work of the American Heart Association.
Heart disease continues to be the nation’s number one killer, claiming a life every 33 seconds.
Stroke is the nation’s number three killer and leading disabler.
Countless hours are generously given each year by dedicated volunteers as they conduct public and professional educational programs, teach CPR, conduct blood pressure screenings, raise funds and support programs in schools, hospitals and work sites.
Volunteers are the nucleus of the American Heart Association and we take our hats off to them.
If you would like to lean more about volunteering for the American Heart Association in your community, we would welcome your call.
Christopher Simon
Uniontown
Mr. Simon is the board president for the Fayette County Division of the American Heart Association.
