From study grows respect
Dear Editor: Recently students from Brownsville Area High School attended a workshop in Wallops Island, Va. It was sponsored by the Marine Science Consortium to advance the knowledge and interest of high school students in the fields of marine science, microbiology and navigation.
Our trip consisted of two days, each with separate field excursions and labs focusing on different aspects of the environment and the marine life on Wallops Island.
On the first day there were two excursions.
One was aboard a research vessel used by the consortium to collect data, such as density, salinity, pH and (DO) dissolved oxygen. This data has a major impact on the quality of life for marine animals within the marsh.
The second excursion of the day was to an intertidal zone on the Chesapeake Bay. On this trip we collected samples of local marine life such as fish, shrimp, crabs that lived in the inertial zone. After this trip when we returned to the consortium our instructor helped us to study and classify all of the organisms that we found.
On the second day of our trip we concentrated on two other areas of the marine environment.
Our first excursion of the day was to the sand dunes.
One of the most interesting aspects of it was the explanation of how all of the huge sand dunes formed from a tiny plant catching a few grains of sand in its leaves.
As well as studying the sand dunes we also got the opportunity to collect seashells on NASA’s private beach.
The second excursion of day two was to the salt marsh.
We were able to experience for ourselves the difference between the various areas of marshland and also observe the variety of animals that live in this environment.
I think that if students were able to experience this program and actually see everything that lives in these fertile areas that we would all have a greater respect for the world around us.

Just who is playing dirty?
Dear Editor:
In regard to Cavanagh’s remark about Mark Roberts “one of the dirtiest politicians I ever met” published in the Herald-Standard, Cavanagh should keep his mouth shut.
What about him changing his registration to independent before the last election, then changing back to Democrat after?
The entire courthouse, except Mark Roberts, needs a good house cleaning.
