Leave red for ribbons, not roads

2 min read

Put the flag back up I am responding to an article that the Herald-Standard published on PennDOT’s request for the removal of the American Flag that was draped across Route 51 just outside of Uniontown.

I believe that more signs of patriotism should be shown to support this great nation that we live in. My hats off to the individual or individuals who proudly displayed “Old Glory” above the highway for all the residents and nonresidents of Fayette County to see the patriotic spirit of its citizens.

The article printed about the flag stated that the person or persons who displayed the flag so proudly didn’t obtain the proper permit or pay the proper permit fees associated with displaying something above a highway or state road.

This sounds more like an issue of financial gain and not an issue of safety for travelers. This flag by far, exceeded the minimum height requirements for a banner or sign and did not present any safety hazard for any passing motorist. PennDOT should be more concerned with caring for our increasingly deteriorating roads and complete the construction of highways that have been under construction for more than a decade.

I think that PennDOT officials have their priorities a little out of sorts, by worrying about an estimated $25 permit fee for showing a sign of patriotism. PennDOT should put the flag back above Route 51 and show the passing travelers that Pennsylvania is a patriotic state proud to display this country’s flag, then turn their attention to more important issues like completing existing projects that our tax dollars are allotted for.
