Missing victim

3 min read

Dear Editor: As I read the article in Thursday’s (May 30) paper about the student who would have been valedictorian at Laurel Highlands graduation I was struck by the fact that the other victim of that horrible accident was not even mentioned by name.

Does the fact that the other girl was not valedictorian exclude her from being just as sorely missed, loved and valued?

Out of respect, the article should have stated her name, not just “another student.”

Spend a shift in our chair

Dear Editor:

This is in response to a letter written by Brian Moser condemning 911 operators request for a pay increase. I am a Fayette County employee. Mr. Moser, have you ever taken the time to look at our paychecks?

Most of us could work as a gas station employee or cashier and make about the same amount of money. As with any job, we have stress and aggravation. Some of us deal with irate individuals.

Some county employees cannot even get a clean drink of water in their office. With contract negotiations coming about, we are requesting a decent paycheck and a good work environment. Nothing less than we deserve.

Before condemning us, please speak to us about our job responsibility and work conditions. Visit our offices. You may be surprised at what you discover.

Where was the public?

Dear Editor:

On May 30, New York City held a final tribute for the tragedy of 9-11. Tens of thousands lined the streets to show their respect and honor to the victims of that terrible tragedy.

On May 25, Uniontown held a ceremony at a local cemetery. A teenager had a dream to show that Fayette County cares. Lael Vojacek worked hard to design this memorial and dedicate it on this bright sunny day.

Where were the flag-waving citizens?

Couldn’t you take one hour out of your Saturday to show this bright, talented young lady that all her work and devotion to this project were not in vain? Her memorial honors the policemen, firemen, EMT’s and dogs who worked tirelessly in the recovery of the 2,823 victims of the attack on the USA.

It was a beautiful and fitting tribute, Lael.

Too bad no more than 30 people could take time to show you that we do care. We do care Lael, and we thank you. We will never forget them. We will never forget you.

By the way, the Herald-Standard didn’t have enough respect to send a reporter or photographer to do a story or take a picture of this beautiful memorial.

Tremendous show of support

Dear Editor:

The show of support from the local community and beyond at the opening of the new St. Vincent dePaul Store was totally awesome. It was the reality of a dream come true for many of us.

It would be remiss if we allowed this opportunity to pass by without acknowledging how much it meant to us to experience this show of love.

Also, your factual commentary of April 16 was greatly appreciated.

The store exists because of the area’s generous donors and the many volunteers who primarily staff it.

The teamwork exhibited on opening day, between the various groups of volunteers, was a joy to behold.

May the good St. Vincent dePaul continue to “help us to help others.”
