A community asset

2 min read

Dear Editor: In regard to a front-page article in the Herald-Standard on Sunday, June 2, “Hospital’s deal with revenue ills,” I would like to make a few comments about Brownsville General Hospital. I believe we are very fortunate to have Brownsville General in our area. It offers another choice and cuts down on travel time for a lot of people to reach a hospital with quality care.

I was twice a patient in this hospital, and I was always treated with the utmost respect and dignity from all the staff, including doctors, nurses, lab, X-ray and MRI personnel.

I had occasion to use the out-patient department a few times for surgical procedures, and the efficient manner in which these employees manage their department is commendable. I believe Brownsville General Hospital is as fine a community hospital as you will find anywhere across the nation. It is an asset to this area.

At present, the hospital is operating a little below the bottom line financially. If the operating margin could be brought up from the current deficit to a positive 1.5 percent or 2 percent by more members of the Brownsville community and the larger area taking advantage of the services that Brownsville General Hospital has to offer, it would go a long way toward assuring the continuing existence of this fine hospital, right here in Brownsville.

It is apparent that the hospital needs the favorable support of the people of its community as well as those of us from the surrounding areas if it is to continue serving our area with quality health care. Our area cannot afford the passing of another working facility, especially a respected health facility.

Who’s paying Bill’s bill

Dear Editor:

I’m curious. Is the lawsuit against the Herald-Standard being paid for by Rep. Bill DeWeese or the taxpayers? Now that I think of it, the way DeWeese treats taxpayer dollars as his own, how would we really know?
