An election recap Dear Editor:

Now that the elections are all over and the smoke has cleared, I noticed some interesting facts about practical politics in Fayette County.

First, in the congressional race, we had Murtha verses Mascara. Murtha – with his seniority, tremendous clout, substantial support from Republicans switching to Democrats for the primary, had most elected officials on his side, spent more than $100,000 in Fayette County, and spread around millions district wide during his political campaign for re-election – drew 8,251 votes.

Mascara who had the support of the people he served year round faithfully, compassionately, and without much grandstanding and who spent about $10,000 in Fayette County earned 8,030 votes.

Although outspent by more than 10 to 1, he also had the support of Commissioner Vicites who was expressing gratitude for the many things Mascara has done for the county and its people over eight years. It’s called loyalty. In essence, out of 16,281 votes cast in Fayette County, the difference of 221 votes was a statistical tie.

Second, is the election for seats on the state Democratic committee in which Commissioner Vicites and Treasurer Bobby Danko ran as a team. They were unopposed, which normally attracts little attention.

Despite the notoriety that goes with the job, Vicites received 11,839 votes, which was an extraordinary vote of confidence from the grassroots people. Danko, viewed as popular and traditionally well liked by voters, drew 10,612 votes.

Those totals were a demonstration of respect for the job the two gentlemen are doing for Fayette County.

To me, the surprising conclusion is that despite the vast media coverage and criticism that is consistently heaped upon public officials the people of Fayette County displayed a surprising characteristic sophistication.

They are knowledgeable, perceptive, and can see through all the hype and ultimately will stand behind those who are performing their duties conscientiously, sincerely and with dignity.
