United Way serves all
They have already organized and produced a fund-raising telethon on HSTV which raised thousands of dollars for the United Way. It’s important to note that the volunteers receive no pay for the hours they devote to the campaign. All of the money raised in the campaign remains in the local community. Sixteen agencies receive funding assistance through the United Way drive. The agencies include the American Red Cross, Arthritis Foundation, Boy Scouts, Catholic Charities, Communities in Schools, Crime Victims Center, East End Community Center, Family Abuse Council, Fayette County Community Action Agency, Girl Scouts, Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers, Jubilee Soup Kitchen, Multiple Sclerosis Service Society, Myasthenia Gravis Association, Salvation Army and the YMCA.
Companies that participate in the United Way effort by offering payroll deductions for employees to make contributions are performing a public service. This allows individual employees to have a few dollars set aside from each paycheck which is then sent directly to the United Way campaign.
Those few dollars can quickly add up to a substantial amount of money. But the strength of such small donations is in the number of people who sign the pledge or a payroll deduction card to have the money withheld each week.
There is no question that the local United Way campaign serves a vital public service. Many thousands of local residents, your neighbors and members of their families, are assisted through the various services offered by the agencies which receive operating funds through the United Way.
Those who cite government programs as being available to assist the poor and the underprivileged forget two points. It is more expensive and inefficient for a government agency, with its red tape, to return even a portion of your tax dollar back to the community. And, by giving you donation directly to the United Way you help your neighbors and improve the community.
You can have total confidence and faith in the services of the local United Way. Take a minute to write a check or sign up now for a payroll deduction where you work.
A donation of a few dollars can make a huge difference.
in the life of an underprivileged child, an isolated elderly person or a family in need.
