Left leaners will topple
Think about this. The Democrats had their collective head handed to them in recent congressional and gubernatorial elections, in large part because a popular president who comes across as being more moderate than he really is campaigned for his party’s candidates stressing national security issues. So in the first major intra-party change, what do the Democrats do? Members of the House are posed to elect a San Francisco liberal – U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi – as their leader. Talk about a political death wish. Electing Pelosi – the perfect caricature of the Democratic Party – is as out of step with middle America as it gets.
In turning to Pelosi, House Democrats also are turning away from the pro-business New Democratic wing of the party, represented in Pennsylvania by Gov.-elect Ed Rendell.
In the end, the move to the left, if unchecked, is going to prove to be a huge mistake. As the editors of The Philadelphia Inquirer wrote, “Centrism is not the same as cowardice; it can take as much courage and creativity to break away from failed ideas as Paul Wellstone showed in struggling to give those ideas new vigor.”
We wonder how many losing elections it will take before they see the error of the way they have chosen.
