Life for Afghan girls improving
Imagine if in addition to reading, writing and arithmetic, classes at your daughter’s school included land-mine awareness. That is one of the courses, the National Geographic Society plans to include at an education center for girls in Afghanistan. The Afghan Girls Fund has collected more than $400,000 and is working with the Asia Foundation to establish a center in Kabul where girls 12 to 17 can receive an education and vocational training.
Under the Taliban regime, girls were not permitted to attend schools.
The center is a welcome sign that life is slowly getting better for Afghan women.
Perhaps one day, courses in spotting land mines will be no longer necessary.
