Inspired to clean gravesites

2 min read

On a rainy Saturday morning in March, 14 California University students with their professor showed up at the historic Bridgeport Cemetery with trimmers, trash bags, gloves and a spirit that kept them going, in the rain, until lunchtime. Volunteers from Dr. Tuennerman’s local history class were soaking wet when they piled into their cars to leave. Several truck loads of bags, full of weather-beaten floral displays and several more truckloads of prunings from out-of-control vegetation were hauled away for disposal.

Glenn Tunney’s articles that appeared in the Herald-Standard were reviewed in class and provoked the interest in the work session, which enabled them to observe some of the unique and old memorial stones.

Their efforts are appreciated by both the patrons and managers of the cemetery.

Supporting the troops

I am writing in support of our troops that are deployed and that are being deployed.

We, as Americans, can show some real support, whether by flying our flag, wearing and displaying yellow ribbons, displaying our support for our U.S. troops in our community in any way. I know 9-11 was tragic.

A day I will never forget, as I’m sure no one else will.

If it weren’t for our troops, we may not be resuming our lives as usual today. I remember when 9-11 took place, the streets of Uniontown were lined with our flag, candles in our windows, special prayers written, and Americans banded together as one, to show the terrorists we are united as one.

Though not all of us have loved ones over in the Middle East, many of us do. And in fact, being Americans, all that are serving and have served in our military, are ours. And we need to support our troops.

My family and I are volunteering with the American Legion Post 51 of Uniontown on the “Yellow Ribbon” campaign, where we were honored to meet and talk with Post 51 Commander Ronald E. Danko and Pennsylvania Commander Gerald Zorn.

The Post Adjutant Joe T. Joseph has offered help to any veteran or families of veterans. If you are in need of any assistance please call 724-438-8688.

We are also in the process of the “Yellow Ribbon” campaign in our local schools. Please remember all of our veterans.
