Pursue hunt for other evil doer
We must not forget, in the jubilation surrounding the capture of Saddam Hussein, that the primary target of our war against terrorism began with the hunt for Osama bin Laden. The prey is still in hiding and priority must be focused on smoking him out. The terrain of Afghanistan is still volatile. Reports indicate that there has been a resurgence of the Taliban and that active recruiting of foot soldiers continues. The Associated Press reports that a Taliban recruiter based in Pakistan said, “Security forces might control the streets, but we command the hearts and minds of the people.”
That remains a frightening scenario. Pakistan has allied itself with the United States and has tracked down some Taliban suspects, but its own political instability has given rise to a terrorists’ recruiting ground. The United States needs to confront this threat head-on and commit resources to capturing bin Laden and wiping out the remnants of the Taliban so that it might never again gain the strength to bitterly attack our country.
This war is far from over, and we must not forget who the enemy is.
