War is necessary
Editor’s Note: The following letters were received from fifth-grade students at Hatfield Elementary School.I believe that the war on terrorism should be fought. Even though I hate the thought of war, it seems necessary when nuclear weapons may be used. They could be in the hands of the terrorist leader Saddam Hussein, the leader of Iraq. He must be stopped.
Saddam is not willing to negotiate. The UN must use force. Saddam is too dangerous to be dealt with easily.
That is why I believe that we would go to war.

Boost test scores with longer day
I have been informed that the United States schools have not ranked first in any subject on our test scores. To get our test scores higher, I propose we have longer school days. Instead of going to school from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., we could go to school until 3:30 or 4 p.m. That way we could get more teaching in the school day.
If we have longer school days, it would give teachers more time to work with the students. Children that maybe aren’t doing so well in class or are falling behind could catch up to the rest of the class. If we do this maybe we could rank first in one of the subjects.

In praise of teachers
I am a fifth grader at Hatfield Elementary. We are going to the junior high soon. I would like to thank the teachers of Hatfield for everything.
From the teachers of kindergarten until now, everyone was great. I would like the town to know that each teacher helped us learn and grow.

An exciting football season
Although the Steelers have had a roller coaster season, they did a great job in the playoffs and I would like to congratulate them. I don’t really watch football games that often, but these playoffs were really exciting and entertaining. I think the Steelers came a long way and did their best to get to the Super Bowl.
Maybe next year they will succeed. I think the Steelers did a great job and I’m proud to be a Steeler fan.

Institute a draft
I think bringing back the draft is a good idea. Some people say that girls shouldn’t serve in the war, but if our country needs us, then we should all have to serve.
I don’t think that it is a good idea for girls to fight in the war, but we can work on computers. After all, everyone is a part of our country and we should be willing to fight for it.
