Searching for cousins
If your surname is Savage and you live in the Fayette County area, you are probably descended from Robinson T. Savage, who, in the late 1700s settled near Blooming Rose, Garrett County, Md. If you are a Casteel, Markley, Hoye, Fike or any of the dozens of other area pioneer families you also may be descended from old Robinson. Savage was one of the early pioneers of Garrett County and his descendants spread throughout the tri-state area. He was the first school teacher and owned the first cast iron cook stove in Western Maryland. He bought the stove in Uniontown and even though it weighed 450 pounds he and a son carried it, slung from two poles, over the mountains to his home situated along Buffalo Run.
Robinson was a contemporary of the famous Garrett County pioneer and hunter, Meshack Browning. Browning, in his well-known book “44 Years of the Life of a Hunter” describes how he and Savage were both sergeants in Captain Beall’s regiment during the War of 1812.
I have written a family history book, “Savage is my Name,” and would like to share the history of the Savage heritage with his many “cuzzins” in the area. The book can be found at the public libraries in Uniontown, Oakland, Md., Morgantown, W.Va. and Friendsville, Md.
I have also placed a family tree of Robinson Savage’s descendants with close to 4,000 names on the Internet.

I am continuing research on the Savage descendents and am in need of local help to place two individuals in their proper location in the Savage tree. One of these individuals was Brewston Amos Savage, or Amos Brewston Savage. He was born circa 1812 and died circa 1848. He reportedly married Catherine Casteel in 1837. He is believed to be a son of Robinson T. Savage. The second individual is Calvin R. Savage. He was born circa 1835 and married Sarah A. Smalley. In 1880, Calvin and his family are listed in the Wharton Township census. I believe Calvin may have been a son of Brewston Amos Savage.

Gifts for homebound
I would like to thank the St. Vincent de Paul Society (St. Sebastian Conference) and the children of St. Sebastian Catholic School.
Every holiday large or small, St. Vincent de Paul sends a gift to the homebound and the children enclose handmade greeting cards. The gifts are delivered to the homebound by the Eucharistic ministers, and the homebound are reminded that they are loved and thought about.

Great job on roads
I’m writing this letter to compliment the Wharton Township road crew. With the recent snowstorm and the snow we have had in the mountains this winter, I feel the Wharton Township road crew has done an excellent job. Keep up the great work.
