Lack of support is daunting
I have been a diabetic for 30 years. Over those years, I have had periods where I diligently followed doctor’s advice only to be told I am selfish or too “good” to eat what other relatives fix for me. I am caring for two grandsons and want to live to see them on their own. I was on SSI for years and then was cut off. I do not get food stamps and have had to rely on food banks a good bit. They do not cater to any special diets. If you do not eat what they give you, you do not eat. Social Security cut me off a few months ago when my spouse started to work.
He is no longer employed and after numerous calls and letters to SSA, they have yet to let me know what if any amount that I would receive.
I started a job myself and can only eat between shifts. As a home health aide, I go to several different homes. Often there is no time to eat between the homes in Washington, Green, Fayette and Monongalia counties. It is not always possible for diabetics to eat properly no matter how much they would like to do the “right thing.”
I am also extremely tired of carrying big bags. Try to go to a Pirates game and see how fast you are told you may not bring in a big bag with your medication and foods that a diabetic can eat. They tell you to return the stuff to your car.
My family started to call my husband “Pack” when we visited and carried in my medication and testing materials as well as my grandson’s medication and diaper bag. We have stopped visiting and feel cut off from family and friends.
You get mixed signals. My friend says to carry my medicine all the time, but then you need a cart to carry the bags. I can’t get the eye doctor to realize that I am having vision problems.
Support has to begin at home. The diabetic is not the only one who needs to be educated.

Waiting to hear about petition
I thank all the people of Luzerne Township who so eagerly and graciously signed my petition addressed to Rep. DeWeese with regards to the cost of the sewerage project in our county.
I also want to thank Ron DeSalvo and Bill Baker for participating and not discouraging my efforts and the Penn Craft Store for posting my petition in order to spread the word.
I will post the response from Rep. DeWeese as soon as I receive it in the store for all to see. The representative received our petition in December.
