Room for more people
The commentary piece by Tony Roberts in the July 15th paper wants to reward people for having fewer, not more children. All the arguments accepted as gospel truth by the author have been shot down by those who know that the world could take care of all the needs of the present people and many more if people didn’t try to control everything for themselves. God said, “Multiply and fill the earth.” He also said, “take ownership of your actions.” This combination of wisdom has more meaning for me than people who set up their own “straw men” to be able to knock them down.

Tardy questions
I note that in the July 15 Herald-Standard you have a news story quoting Bush’s claim that he used “darn good intelligence,” an editorial questioning the logic of Bush’s advisors, and a cartoon that more directly challenges Bush’s honesty.
Thank you for dealing head-on with an issue some would have you dodge. My problem is this: Where was the American press when Bush delivered his State of the Union address and when Colin Powell addressed the United Nations?
At that time the British press did not hesitate to challenge Tony Blair’s statements. In fact, the British press also pointed out that much of Powell’s speech was based on an already discredited academic paper. For too many weeks, as America was being led into war because Saddam Hussein was a “clear and present danger,” the American press did not investigate. We know the television news agencies are not equipped for or interested in investigative reporting, but the American newspaper press has a tradition of asking the hard questions.
Let’s hope that you and your colleagues in newspaper journalism will recognize a need to get at the truth. A democracy depends on an informed electorate.

Clearing suspicions
This letter is in reference to your story Monday, July 2, regarding the apprehension of four suspected out-of-state bank robbers in the alley of South Beeson Boulevard. As the owner of Big Daddy’s Tattoos, I’d like to make it clear that the Saturday morning law enforcement activity was related to that police matter and had nothing to do with the shop.
There are rental properties surrounding our building and police officers frequently stop to check in or ask questions. This, coupled with being located downtown creates chaos at times but we strive to close at a reasonable time, keep clients parked in our lot and generally to respect our neighbors.
Thanks for the opportunity to quell any fears.
