In praise of firefighters
On April 16, the Farmington Volunteer Fire Department held its annual appreciation dinner. This dinner recognized the firemen for the fine jobs they do all year long. They put their lives on the line every time that siren goes off. Their motto is “Ever Willing – Ever Ready.” I know you sometimes hear bad things about a fireman doing something wrong in his fire department. This doesn’t pertain to all volunteers. One bad apple doesn’t always spoil the bunch.
So remember when you see a fireman directing traffic. Don’t try and run them over. Slow down. They are trying to save a life – yours. Thanks to everyone who helped to make the dinner a success.

Nearby care
On April 14 I had a physical examination at the new Uniontown Veterans Clinic, and was very impressed.
I received excellent care. I want to take this opportunity to thank the doctors, nurses and professional staff.
Now I no longer have to schedule appointments at the Veterans Administration facilities in Pittsburgh or Greensburg.

Getting it right
April 14 marks the second of two recent instances when the Herald-Standard has elevated its credibility by correctly referring to the slate dumps in the historic coal mining fields of our region.
The most recent appears on the foregoing date in the caption for the picture of the coke ovens and mine in Republic. Competing regional pundits, for some clandestine purpose, insist on using incorrect terms such as coal refuse pile, gob pile, Greene County favorite, slack dump, slag dump, etc.
Keep up the good work. The truth shall set us free.
