NAACP drives for members

3 min read

The Fayette County Branch of NAACP will join hundreds of other branches of the nation’s oldest, largest and most effective civil rights organization in an unprecedented national membership campaign during February. This will be an exciting campaign full of entertainment and information of value to our community. For many people, it will answer the question of what the NAACP is doing today to address the major problems of our times. I think you will be very pleased with what you hear and will want to become involved in our important work.

The comments reflect the theme of our campaign – “The Time is NOW.” Its goal is to increase the associations’ membership, so that we can continue to fight against policies which have put more black men in prison than in college; against educational schemes which leave our children behind; against tax cuts that starve the government, reward the wealthy and place additional burdens on the poor and middle class; and against marginalization of people of color in any sphere of American life.

We see this as a golden opportunity for the people of Fayette County to get behind the NAACP, which has done so much to benefit so many of us over 95 years. We are delighted to have this opportunity to join in such a worthy cause and urge you to sign up as members of this great organization. Deacon Eugene Grooms, first vice president, is chairing the campaign.

The National Association of the Advancement of Colored People is the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its half-million adult and youth members throughout the United States and the world are frontline advocates of civil rights, social justice and equal opportunity under the law.

Lock box looking good

What is wrong with the people in this country? Why haven’t they caught on to Bush & Co.?

They used scare tactics to convince us war was necessary and now scare tactics are being used so they can mess with Social Security. We had better wake up.

Investing in the stock market is a risk for average people. I know this first hand.

Bush is indebted to Wall Street, but why should our retirees present and future pay his debt? He could repeal the tax breaks he gave the wealthy and also quit borrowing from Social Security. I think this is a less radical solution to a problem that may or may not exist.

Al Gore’s lock box does not seem like a bad idea now.

Theater applause

Marty Schiff! What a wonderful showman and personality plus. We are so fortunate to have this man to promote the State Theater. A great improvement has been made, and Uniontown is such a nice place to make progress. A big thanks to Mr. Hardy also and all the people who work so hard to make Uniontown a place to be proud of.
