State drug benefit available

1 min read

I would like to share valuable information concerning a new drug benefit available to all Pennsylvania residents of any age who are on a low income, are disabled, and are without health insurance coverage. This drug benefit is being administrated by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging PACE prescription program, and it is offered as part of a 2004 settlement between Medco Health Solutions, the State Attorney General’s office, and 19 other states in the United States.

The settlement states that Medco violated Pennsylvania’s unfair trade practice laws by allegedly persuading doctors to switch patients to different medications on the basis that it would save money, but the savings were not always passed on to individual patients or their health plans.

Under the settlement, Medco agreed to provide the states with funds to assist consumers with prescription drug costs. Pennsylvania’s share of $1.8 million will be used to defray medication costs for approximately 3,000 residents.

Anyone wishing to enroll in the benefit should contact the PACE Clearinghouse at 1-800-955-0989 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those who qualify will receive the benefit for use through April 2006.
