Officials helpful in search

2 min read

I recently embarked on the arduous task of tracing my family genealogy on both my father’s and mother’s side. Well let me say from the start I thought it would be next to impossible to do. I soon found that not to be true, thanks to all the information that’s is available to all of us “right in our own back yard.” My first stop on my journey was the local Uniontown Library. After some inquiries I was directed to the second floor and the Pennsylvania Room, which I was really surprised to find is a room full of old and new reference books, microfilm files, indexed obituary card files, old tax records, census records, and graveyard listings with almost anything you would need to research your family tree. Computers are available for research and most of the information in the computers databases was imputed by many volunteers. It also comes equipped with staffer Vicki Leonelli, who is just a wealth of knowledge, was very helpful and took a very sincere interest in the work I was doing. I can’t image the number of hours she saved me. She informed me that some documents and dates I still needed would only be available at the courthouse. Needless to say I wasn’t looking forward to this part of my journey. Wel,l again I was in for a surprise.

The staffs of both Recorder of Deeds Dave Malosky and Register of Wills Don Redman were so helpful to me I have to take my hat off to them. After many days spent in each of the respective offices I’ve come away with a new appreciation for the professionalism and hard work that both these offices do every day.

Let me close by saying this has been a rewarding journey made easy by the people I’ve mention in this letter. I would also like to advise anyone that is interested in their family’s past don’t wait till it to late and all the people you need to talk to are gone. Get a tape-recorded note pad and go talk to your grandmother and grandfather and the older aunts and uncles now while they are alive. It makes things a lot easier, believer me.
