Hospital event praised
The recent open house held at Highlands Hospital to celebrate the 20th anniversary as an independent facility offers a vivid example how employers and employees can succeed in an industry that has been struggling through decades of serious economic problems. The gala affair that educated, entertained, and fed over a thousand people deserves everyone’s appreciation and admiration. The unique idea for inviting the public to a “party” in an operating hospital originated among the officers of the union. I’m sure management had to do some soul searching before conceding to such an event on their premises, e.g,. effects on patient care, cleanliness, liabilities, security, emergencies, etc.
Their most outstanding accomplishment was coordinating union members, staff, management, police crowd and parking control, volunteers who set up stalls for a variety of interests, donations, government officials, displays in the lobby and outside of the building, and the clean up afterwards. The financial contributions from union headquarters and other generous supporters explain how this spirit of teamwork has enabled a small- town hospital to survive in these threatening times.
Above all, the most important factor in the hospital’s progress has been the strong public devotion demonstrated in times of need. Both the caregivers and the patients can take pride in having such quality healthcare so close to home.
In conclusion, one of the most frequent statements from those who have benefited from treatments and whose lives have been saved, has been their recognition of the kindness and compassion shown by the hospital people who cared for them. This was a culture developed many years ago and still exists today.
I hope to see more events like this which brings a cross section of our community together in the common cause of insuring this vital institution continues to grow and thrive.
