Georges spending questioned
Mr. Andy Popovich, a Georges Township resident, wrote an excellent letter to the editor and I agree with him completely. There was no need to raise taxes in Georges Township. Mr. Popovich wonders who came up with the 95 percent increase in taxation. I wonder where is all the money going? Georges Township budget, according to Ms. Sungala, Herald Standard reporter, is $1,195,663. That’s right over one million dollars. Georges Township Supervisors/Roadmasters report they only have 70 miles of roads in Georges Township. I divided 1,195,663 by 70 and came up with $170,809 for each mile. Wow! That’s a lot of expense per mile. That’s right $170,809 per mile. My math is correct. I know they could contract it out and save taxpayers lots of money. I know a lot of people who would like a contract for $170,809 to maintain only one mile of road and this is not a 365-day job.
The three supervisors/roadmasters, six truck drivers, one secretary/treasurer have 70 miles of township roads to maintain. Wow! $170,809 per mile, this is outrageously high. Georges Township has roads of gold.
I can think of no other services offered by Georges Township. They have no police department, no city lights, no paid fire department (monies given to volunteers come from Harrisburg, nothing comes from Georges funds), no Georges Township sewage, no Georges Township garbage collection (Fairchance provides garbage at no extra cost), no recreation facilities, no water department, no street cleaning and no leaf gathering machines. Can you think of something they do besides take care of 70 miles of roads in Georges Township? The roads that are amiesited/repaved are done by the Fayette County Redevelopment Authority grant money from Harrisburg, not funded from Georges Township taxes.
We don’t need three roadmasters. The three supervisors should elect only one roadmaster. We don’t need three roadmaster bosses. Where’s all the money going?
