U.S. war in Iraq called an unlawful invasion
In the course of the history of our nation we have never violated the sovereignty of another country through invasion. Many Americans now know, that the stated reasons for going to war were false, although the Bush administration has now chosen to hang its hat on the notion that it was necessary to remove Saddam from power due to his being a tyrant.
I find it quite interesting that most of the right wingers who supported the invasion of Iraq were opposed to sanctions approved by the International community against the tyrannical South African apartheid regime particularly Vice President Cheney whose hands are drenched in complicity relative to the illegal Iraq invasion, notwithstanding that Halliburton, a company that he headed prior to accepting Mr. Bush’s appointment to be vice president, has received no less than one, $10 billion no-bid contract in Iraq.
During the Clinton administration the mantra espoused by the Republicans was the “Rule of Law,” in reference to his relationship with Monica Lewinsky. How can the American people, through their Democratic Congress, not demand the Bush administration be held to the same standard? I recently heard the incoming Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi say on national television that impeachment was off the table and that she was more concerned about moving the country forward in a by partisan manner, to which our president quickly concurred. The Democratic congress must not shrink from its responsibility. It must find the resolve to investigate and present to the American people the truth regarding our nation’s involvement in Iraq. In doing so perhaps the whole congress will be able to sleep better at night including those Democrats who voted for the war. It seems now that Sen. Kerry’s flip-flopping over the war was a good thing; at least he had the decency as a human being to admit that he had made a mistake and voted against it.
It is quite laughable that the president would even allow the word bipartisan or rule of law to spew from his lips, when in fact he has placed himself above the highest law of the land our constitution. Over the last six years he has ridden roughshod over not only the Democrats in congress but the Republicans as well, in fact to the point of intimidation.
However, I must say that there have been a number of sycophants in the Republican Congress who moved lockstep with the president’s imperial actions. No congressperson should allow any president to steer or influence them in a direction that is harmful and hurtful to the electorate. I would submit to you that reason, and concern for the well being of fellow Americans should always be the overriding factor and not partisanship or political gain.
We have all witnessed our President and a bipartisan congress lead us in to a war based upon lies. A war that has caused the deaths of thousands of Iraqi human beings and nearly 3,000 of our nation’s children, as well as the maiming of over 20,000. When a sane person makes a mistake they usually acknowledge it and reverse their course in order to correct or lessen the consequences of its impact. Because of the horrific consequences precipitating out of Iraq, like a torrential downpour, in my opinion it would behoove the President to take into account in a meaningful way all of the advice presented to him in recent days in order to extricate our children out of harms way in Iraq. I realize that admitting that he led our nation in to war based upon information he knew to be erroneous is a difficult notion particularly when mothers and fathers relied upon him as the leader of our nation to be truthful to them prior to requesting that they render their children to the President in the defense of our country. The Congress must now act in a transparent manner to lay our the facts regarding this fiasco in Iraq, because those who have lost loved ones deserve the truth and cannot wait in historical revisionists to give them some patriotic Cinderella portrayal of this tragedy.
The action or lack of action by the church regarding the aforementioned matters has been absolutely phenomenal. Their lack of outrage to the violation of law and the carnage in Iraq suggests that they and their God value the lives of Christians more so than the Iraqis; that is a God that I want no part of. My God is no respecter of person and because are hidden in him, he can make no difference despite the illusions and delusions of the Christian church in America. I only hope that this prestigious organization will come to its senses and put a moral check of our government’s involvement in Iraq, particularly the executive branch.
