Kriek brings back memories
It was nice to read Jim Kriek’s article about American Legion Baseball in Fayette County in 1968-69. Those were fine years and I was fortunate to play on a Republic team that featured outstanding players like Joe Mazurek, Gary Bochna, Bernie Zuchelkowski, Gabby Holloman, Rodney Coliauta, Dan Solomon, Jack Rubenthal and Lou Piccolomini. We played against great competition in the league with fine ballplayers like Fred Norton, Bob Bailor, Jim Braxton and Bob Wolinski from Connellsville; Bob Radosevich from Masontown; Rick Vernon and Ken Meadows from Uniontown; Ralph Rice from Colonial; and the outstanding Point Marion teams that were always in the hunt.
I remember managers like Herman Welsh, Sam Franks, and Point Marion’s coach (his name eludes me) that always created great games. I will never forget playing at Connellsville against a great team with the big crowds and of course, “Mr. Rainbow.” Those were great years that seem like yesterday.
As Bob Hope said, “Thanks for the memories.”
