Support sanctity of human life
When reading columns like Paul Sunyak’s “Real Democratic Party, Please Stand Up,” I’m engrossed in an internal struggle. I know the goal of editorial writers is to get attention. Like TV networks, most editorial writers don’t care if the attention they get is negative or positive. As long as they get attention, they’re happy. Responding to editorials with letters to the editor therefore, feeds the author’s desire for attention.
I recognize however, that some people read editorials with an open heart. They consider all sides of an issue to determine which side is most valid. It is for them that I respond to Paul Sunyak.
Mr. Sunyak supports Ed Rendell’s assertion that the Bible doesn’t speak directly about abortion, so the issue isn’t as important as feeding the poor, about which Jesus speaks constantly.
The Gospels reveal Jesus’ intense love for every human life. Jesus says in John 13:34, that we should, “…love one another, as I have loved you.” Do we love children by destroying them? Jesus calls for love, mercy, and justice in the Gospels contradict the destruction of innocent life.
God does speak against sacrificing children to idols (Ezekiel 16:20-21). Some in the Old Testament sacrificed their children to idols by burning them as offerings.
Our idols today are financial convenience, “choice,” and whatever other reasons a mother might sacrifice her child. The only difference today is that we sacrifice children before they leave their mothers’ wombs.
Sunyak’s and Rendell’s assertion that the protection of the unborn is somehow less important to Christians that caring for the poor is unfounded. A Christian’s call to support the sanctity of human life means that stopping and serving poor are the same cause.
