How quickly some forget
On Sept. 11, 2001, an unprovoked attack on our country resulted in the loss of life for thousands of people who were simply minding their own business. Our emotions went from shock and fear to vowing to never forget and to stand united.
On the fifth anniversary of this horrible day in history, homage was paid in the media, at nationally televised sporting events and with the lowering of flags to half-staff, as well as with memorial services at the sites of the carnage.
Yet, at least one local school district didn’t even pay tribute to the memory of those who lost their lives or to the survivors who still suffer from that barbaric event by observing a moment of silence.
School was dismissed early five years ago, but today all seems to have been forgotten as we seem to have settled back into the safety of our daily routines.
Is it too much to ask or am I being unrealistic in expecting our school administrators to instill a sense of patriotism in their students by having the entire school district pause for a moment of silence in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11?
