Thanks for supporting veterans
Americanism Day this year will be celebrated with a World War II memorial site for the first time in over 40 years. I had the honor and privilege of serving on the construction committee headed by Joe T. Joseph. Raising sufficient funds was just one of our hurdles. There were many people who helped make this a success and I’d like to take this time to name a few. The top of the list has to be Joe Joseph. For various reasons there were questions and criticisms as to where it should be built. It was through Joe’s determination that had it put right where it is today, in front of our courthouse right where the original one was.
When we needed verification of the names of our WW II veterans from our city limits it was Rev. Pete Malik who donated weeks of his time. When one organization was unable to honor a much needed $25,000 pledge it was a Vietnam veteran who came forward and donated a $15,000 check and over $10,00 in purchases.
When one of our county commissioners sent his assistant to tell us that it was thought that we had too many flags, that they made too much noise and that our plan would take away some aesthetic value of the court house, it was Angela Zimmerlink, who also was at that meeting, who assured us that our plan could proceed as we wanted.
Finally, this newspaper was a great help. Not only did this newspaper purchase a flag, it donated thousands of dollars worth of prime advertising space printing all the names of our city’s veterans.
One thing will always be certain of the people of a city and our county is that we do not forget those who help us keep the freedoms we live our lives with each and every day.

Time for Bush to end war
Tonight, Mr. Bush announced on the television, when the war is won on terrorism, the war will end in Iraq. It looks like this war will continue; what does Mr. Bush have in mind to end the war on terror?
Too many soldiers have returned home with shattered bodies and shattered minds. I don’t like to think of how many have come home in body bags and how many more will follow.
Terror was to blame for the 9/11, for the schools, home invasion, possibly for food contamination. Terror has been a part of our lives since 2003, when Mr. Bush would get Bin Laden dead or alive, and with the invasion of Iraq.
Mr. Bush has made numerous speeches, he has yet to tell the American people when this war will end. Our government has been dragging their feet too long.
Are we prolonging this war so this administration can get richer with the spoils of this war? Is it so hard to admit we had no plan when we entered this war?
Terror would cease when we respect other countries and our neighbors, or we can continue to be the bully on the block? The Democrats and the Republicans should put all their effort into bringing our troops home.
Once again I want to thank the Herald-Standard for allowing the editorials to be published and for the freedom to speak.
