Uniontown School Board candidates endorsed
In the race for school director in the Uniontown Area School District, the Herald-Standard editorial board endorses incumbents Susan S. Clay, Kenneth G. Meadows and Tammy J. Boyle, and challengers Vincent Winfrey and Philip Holt. The strongest support came for Clay, who impressed us with the depth and breadth of her general knowledge on school operations; Meadows, whose moderate and practical views on the controversial high school building project caught our attention; and Winfrey, whose desire to find common ground among the warring factions seemed a commendable approach.
Just behind them was Boyle, who also seemed to know her stuff when it came to the intricacies of the building project, and who noted, “I do not want to see my taxes raised more than anybody else (does).”
Selecting Holt was a close call from among a grouping that included two other challengers, Paul Bortz Sr. and Alan George. Holt prevailed in the end because we viewed him as someone who recognizes the importance of a providing a quality education, but who also knows that school boards must be receptive to the public they serve.
In making our selections, it is our hope that the configuration we picked will work to develop a stronger consensus on the building project, one that meets with wider public approval, in cost and in approach.
